I need help hiring an SEO consultant.

I have a new website and blog in the food niche that is starting to rank on Google. I think it is because I spend a lot of time writing good relevant material, and maybe the SEO pack that I downloaded is helping. However, I would like to compete with larger sites, and well known blogs for keywords. After some thought I decided to hire an SEO expert to help. My issue is I am a little afraid that starting an SEO campaign will ruin my site. I don't know much about SEO, but I have heard about the google updates and how some techniques that worked in the past can now cripple your rankings. One guy I am interested in hiring says he will submit my site to over 3,000 high-quality back-links and directories. Is this good or bad? I guess my main question is now that google has changed their algorithm, what should I look for when hiring an SEO consultant? What would the person need to do to help me rank and not destroy my reputation with google?

I would recommend you do your own SEO and adwords campaign yourself. If your site has quality content that your visitors like, you'll have no problem with site traffic no matter what google does.

be sure to have a facebook like button on your website... this can build traffic quickly once people start to like your site and it wont be dependant upon google.

Being in googles results are good, but it's not the only way to get good traffic.

Also, just because someone tries to impress you saying your site will be submitted to thousands of places for quality backlinks doesn't mean you'll see instant results in google.

Google checks alot of things, not just backlinks. If the backlinks are on a poor ranking website that links back to yours, it may not help your site much.

Look to include google analytics as it will give you alot of data on your visitors. If your bounce rate is high and you want people to stay on your site then you need to find out what is going on.

You're better off doing adwords (start small and grow over time as you learn how adwords works) to get quality traffic.

This is probably the best advise. If you are a complete newbie, just keep the adwords aside for the time being. But begin doing SEO your self. The number of backlinks is not as important as it was. Its the quality of backlinks that matter. And it takes some time to build them. If you are getting 3000 backlinks in a few months, forget it - it wont work.

My Suggestion is to hire a experienced SEO Consultant so that they will guide you because lot of Google algorithm changes now So it will not work by doing yourself. you need a consultant.

Its bad. Very bad. the minute a so called SEO starts talking about thousands of links its nothing but bad. Post Penguin that number of links can hurt your site very badly. Yes a site can have lots of links naturally and even virally but for a SEO to come out and tell you he will deliver thousands the source of the links will be mostly link spam.
