Default Is Porn Really Bad?

OK, first I am wondering if that headline would gather a lot of attention? And then I am wondering what you were thinking this post would be about?

Actually, I am wondering if Google (or other SEs) will penalize a site if it has the word "porn" in it's content? I have a travel site that pulls in local news feeds and a recent news headline went something like "Local man arrested and found with porn videos...".

Now the content itself is not bad, it is just a news story that has a "bad" word in it.

It worried me when I fist saw it, not that it offended me, but I started thinking if this would have any negative affects to the site.

That all for now, thanks,

Greg

I think depends on what people search for. If lets say someone were to search for 'Jenna Jameson' on Google, then it would be fine. But on other general search terms, the site with the said content wil generally rank lower.

I don't think google will penalize you for link to other website, where is content about porn. More you can be penalized for duplicate content.

On other hand we try to minimize such words on our web site too.
e.g. we do affiliate software (Post Affiliate Pro), which is used also by providers of porn sites for clicks tracking and paying commissions for banners impressions on other porn web sites, but we don't use their web sites as references :-)

Main reason, why we don't use their reference is, that we don't want to promote such things on our website, not because we are afraid of google.

Considering the context here (the fact that the link is a news story and doesn't mention any of the usual dirty references that pornographers like to use...you know what I'm talking about), I think you're fine.

You can be penalized if you link to bad "neighborhoods". Having the word "porn" by itself won't get you in trouble with google.

I don't think that the Big G will penalize you because the niche of your website is not porn . Its related to travel news and all other pages on your website do not have the keyword "porn" . So , you really do not need to worry .

Well a search of "porn" right here in the Warrior Forum brings back 15 pages of results. So the word alone is not going to hurt your site.

Didn't Harris Fellman have trouble from Google with his term "Site Stealer"?

Porn isn’t intrinsically bad” is a step on the slippery slope to having porn everywhere, with no restrictions, because hey, it doesn’t really matter. It’s the addicted users that are the problem, not the addictive substance itself which is available everywhere 24/7.

I highly doubt it. If you're worried, get the page rank checker and see what happens with and without that term on the page. Now you have verifiable results you can share with the rest of us.

Apparently alot of people around here don't actually read the forum post before they comment on it. Interesting to say the least.

What happens with porn is that it's easy for a site owner to fall into blackhat ways because getting incoming links is difficult and the competition is cutthroat. They become 'bad neighborhood' sites because of malware, cloaking and other such tactics and not because of the adult content.

Porn is not bad .Thats just depend on the way you optimize it. Niche(s) relevancy are very important...And when you say VERY IMPORTANT.. Its a serious matter

I think if it is the only one word in your site then it should be alright unless your site has full content of those words and you are targeting financial keywords. Think of it.

Unless you are hoping to come up for adult related terms, which you are not then it could have a negative effect on your ranking. I made a similar problem on my movie review site when reviewing the film, 'Zack and Miri Make A Porno' which was not a porn film. Then, it was getting traffic to the site from people using the search term 'film porno' which was not good
