Default Avoiding the index/splash page being SEO'd

So I have a WP Site/Blog with the first page being mostly a graphics page with an 'enter' button (long story and not looking to change at this time). At this point, since there is not a lot of text for search engine love on there, what do you all recommend:
- Should i have my robots.txt file ignore the index page, or is this a bad/frowned upon technique? Would it be possible for it to go straight to my home page and ignore the index page?
- Should I just put in misc. language in the footer talking about what the site is about?

Thanks for your help!
