Default "Subdomain" for new site section?

I'm adding a new section to my static site that will act sort of like a blog with frequently updated content that I can put out on RSS.

Why don't I do a real blog?... you might very well ask. Because I'm already working at my limit and I figure I can get most of the advantages of a blog by adding it to my existing website.

People have recommended I do this by adding a subdomain. But what the hell is a subdomain? My research shows that it's simply a regular domain in the domain.com format.

So my real question is this: What format should I use for adding this new section to my website to get the most SEO advantages?

Should I use a new directory, i.e. www.mydomain.com/newfolder/news.html

This way I could add as many new pages as I want while organizing them all in a suitable directory.

Or should I just add new pages to the root domain as needed?

I know other people have used this "blog" strategy on a static site so any tips would be most appreciated!

Default Re: "Subdomain" for new site section?

I'd go for the new directory and avoid a sub domain like example.mydomain.com

Because as far as I understand SEO wise the subdomain would be treated as a diff domain & your links going to the subdomain will not count towards the regular domain very much if at all.

Are you new website is related to the old domain? If yes, just use directory else use subdomain.
e.g :

related :
seo.com
seo.com/link

not related:
seo.com
funny.seo.com
