Default Tweaking High-Organic-Ranking Sales Pages - Risky for SEO?

My sales page ranks very high for its target terms.

However, I want to tweak teh copy significantly.

Is it a huge risk for my page's SEO? Or is this an over-concern?

You are smart to consider the SEO consequences. I would guess that if your site ranks well because of strong backlinks, then you aren't likely to get hurt. If you really feel that you need to make significant changes, I would just try to make sure that the new sales copy targets the words you are currently ranking well for.

Why not create a second page and use both?

Hey Oil dude,

I if you are using Clickbank for affiliates or adwords for paid traffic etc...

I would create a new site for each like: www.yourdomain.com/ppc or www.yourdomain.com/clickbank

Have each one conduct a split test between your site that is not changed and the other with the changes you want to make.

If the changes boost conversion I would than update the site that ranks in the organics. An important note to go along with this type of test is you will want to add "nofollow" tags so you don't run the risk of getting slapped by google for duplicate content.

Cheers,

I dont think Google slaps anyoen for dupe content. They just dont show your pages in the index if you have dupe on your own site.

Perhaps I am wrong though..

if you have the same content all hosted under the same domain you will get slapped.

Keep a record of any changes you make. If the changes affect your rankings, you can always change them back, and your rankings should come back.
