Default PPC Beginners - Yahoo & MSN

Pay Per Click Marketing - Don't forget about Yahoo & MSN! With Google's seemingly ever increasing domination of the search engine market, it has become all too common in recent years for people to concentrate exclusively on Adwords, and forget completely about the other search engines which still make up quite a significant percentage of the total market volume. If you do this, you are definitely leaving money on the table. There is no doubt that Adwords is the market leader, and should be the major focus of your pay per click campaigns, but there are very good reasons why you should use the other search engines as well.

Using Yahoo's search marketing program will save you money initially, as obviously the top rankings on a Yahoo page are not as valuable as those on a Google page. There is little point in paying for search engine marketing unless you can get your ad seen on the front page. With Yahoo, you can get on the front page with a budget which would only give you a place on subsequent pages with Google. This is far more likely to give you a return on investment, which you can then re-invest in Adwords. Bid on long tail keyword phrases, and you can start your campaign with very little risk.

What is true of Yahoo is also true of MSN, only even more so. The traffic you are buying, from being on the front page of the search engine results, will be cheaper still with MSN. The only consideration here is that the MSN search engine has a higher percentage of users among certain demographics, so it is probably unwise to start a campaign using just MSN. Combine MSN with Yahoo, target cheaper long tail keyword phrases, and you can then test and track and look to improve results. Once you have found phrases which are consistently profitable, you can then scale up your campaign to include Google. Including Yahoo and MSN in your pay per click marketing gives you the means to achieve more consistent results.

I agree, I believe a lot of people are blinded into thinking the only good PPC programs are only Google Adwords, but there are other good alternatives as well and it is even better for your buck. I recommend joining various PPC programs beforing folding all in your investments in Google's Adwords program.

2 years ago I made a killing on Yahoo Search Marketing (miss those days! lol) and I'm in the UK. Never heard it was country specific but I haven't used it in 2 years so wouldn't know now

I think the clunky interfaces put a lot of people off MSN and Yahoo. Long tails are also difficult to target on MSN because of the low traffic. I'd recommend using their keyword tool first and adjusting bids to position 1 then scale out from there.

I've heard that about Y and especially MSN when it comes to getting keywords rejected. A couple years ago I liked Yahoo's interface as you could see what your competitors were bidding, now I hear it's a real pain
