Default Quick keyword research question

When searching for a keyword in Google to determine competition levels, do you use broad, "phrase" or [exact]?

I tend to use [exact] when determining search volume, but would be interested to know what is best practise for competitor levels.

Many Thanks

Yes, you should use exact if you are doing research for your keyword phrases.
