Blog question - to ping or not to ping?

Hi

Ive been working on a word press blog.

Ive been following a blog system and in it, he says to use pinomatic after each post and ping the blog.

However I know that wordpress pings after you make a post anyway, so I was wondering what the best option is? To use pingomatic or just leave it as is? And should I ping the specific post or just the blog home page each time?

And one more thing, Ive got the google sitemaps xml installed on the blog and its workign, but should I make a link to the sitemap on the home page or just leave it as is? Its telling google where it is so I assume its more for googles sake than for humans, is that right?

As long as your sitemap is working there is no need to ping.. it's just an additional work.. make sure your sitemap is working as indicated in google webmaster central.

Thanks for the advice, where abouts on the webmaster central page do you check the sitemap? The wordpress plugin page says everything is ok, is it worth listening to that or best to check where u said?

I ping my blogs after each new post. It seems to not have hurt, so...

This is just another example how one needs to read a lot of
stuff to find out what the real consequences of certain
actions like this are. I will still ping after new posts until
I hear it is the kiss of death in no uncertain terms.

If anyone has a blog post or other detailed info, let me know!

Pinging will only give a reminder to other networks that you have published work. If you got a sitemap ready and got backlinks, you don't readily need to ping your site.

Thanks for the replies guys. On the pingomatic it tells me the blog has recently pinged (I ping after I post a new post) so maybe I should wait a couple hours and then ping with pingomatic? It would be good to find a be all and end all answer, I will have to research it and post back here if I find one.

Actually, pinging of blogs is not a must

But if you want fact indexing of your blog post, it would be a great choice.

Anyway, you can use blog baster as a pinging software for your links, just be careful with this, just ping your blog ones, repetition could harm your blog/ site.

WordPress makes this easy for you by listing Ping-O-Matic's server by default. All you need to do is sit back and let it work for you!

I dont think that you need to manually ping the blog everytime you update it, as it is automatically done by Pingomatic after every post added. But remember pingomatic only pings when a new post is added to the blog and not on editting a post.

I've never botherd pinging my blolg, but maybe i should. Still a bit confused. It's a wordpress blog on my own domain. Would this use ping-o-matic automatically or do I have to configure something?
