It's ok to have folders on your site. It also makes it a lot easier to find stuff when you're working on it.
Search Engines look at the page content - not what folder on your site it's in. I've been doing this for 11 years now and folders have never hurt me. |

I said this in another post, but I'll say it again. I've achieved high rankings with Joomla 1.0.x's crazy default URL structure. Thus, it's the content that's important. But, making the URL readable for the users primarily (Not just SE's), may also help in SERPs.

Subdomains might even end up helping you. Take DogBedReviews.com for example:
Poodle.DogBedReviews.com Scottie.DogBedReviews.com GermanShepherd.DogBedReviews.com Or how about CarInsurance.com: Seattle.CarInsurance.com: NewYork.CarInsurance.com: Chicago.CarInsurance.com: You're logically fiting more specific keywords (without stuffing) into your domain name, so that can't be a bad thing. Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand, Charles |

I had sort of a related question in mind, and now have a chance to bring it up.
Does someone have an opinion on the psychological aspect of using subdomains? What I mean is if you have a generic domain name or a broader term in your domain name, and you are looking to promote an offer or product with a redirect to the converting page... Does it sound wiser to use a subdomain in that case. Does it sound like something that would improve clickthru or establish better credibility for the conversion? EXAMPLES: http:// bewellbuddy.com/aloeha.html -or- http:// aloe-vera.bewellbuddy.com/ Both point to the same page but the second one has the specific type of product at the beginning. So is that what the general surfer will see first and will that register in their minds? Will they be more inclined to click or even buy if they are looking for aloe vera and the first thing they see after the http in their URL bar is the exact thing they're looking for? Opinions anyone? |

If you have your domain and subdomains going to the same page Google will see it as duplicate content and penalize you.
Your site will disappear in the search results. |

Are you sure about that? Or do you mean only if my home page url and a subdomain point to the same page?
My top level URL is a live blog. But there is a folder in the directory and a subdomain which both point to the same site. |

Your subdomain is nothing more than a folder in the root of your main domain although Google will treat it and show it as a seperate domain. I've been there - done that - and learned the hard way not to do it. I've done affiliate marketing for 11 years now. | |

sure it can, google treats every page as its own unique page - the key is making sure the urls do not use paramters and your titles/headings and keywords match.

Ok. I'm not worried about that regardless because both links redirect to the same site. And I don't think my blog will be penalized itself because 2 different pages out of a few thousand redirect to the same site (and not my site either). I'm not using the pages to rank for the redirect or anything like that.
I'd still like to know if anyone has an opinion on the matter. From a surfer's standpoint, would they be more inclined to click on a link with the specific term they are looking for in the subdomain title (which appears before the main domain) or a folder title after the main domain URL? |
