Promoting sites with sign up box?

I would like other ppc marketers opinion on whether it is a good idea to promote sites that have a email sign up where visitors can get something like a newsletter, or the first lesson free, or something else of value.

I feel if I am spending money to get visitors to the site, I want the visitor to buy. I don't want to be paying money to help the site owner build their list. I know some say they still track the sale from the email, but how many who might have bought, take the free stuff and leave.

Am I looking at this wrong?
