How to improve Backlinks

hi folks.I am kinda new to internet marketing.I am learning a lot about seo and how backlinks are so important to get good rankings.There are lots of ways and approaches to do that i guess..but the more i read the more i get confused..can somebody plz help me out ? what is the good and bad way of getting backlinks ?

The way that I do this is through directory submissions, and a good place to find some directories is here:

The good = anything you feel comfortable explaining to your mother.
The bad = everything else.

Don't pay for links, don't participate in link farms, don't do anything that you think Google would look badly upon as you trying to manipulate the results.

Things that are easy:
1) Directory submissions
2) Article marketing - resource box points back to your domain
3) Social bookmarking of your blog posts, etc
4) Forum postings (like this one) where do-follow signatures are used
5) Blog postings (do-follow and some even say nofollow are fine)

One other thing that takes work but can get big results is a giveaway of some kind. if you put something on your site that is free and interesting, lots of poeple will link to you automatically. That's the best way to go if you are creative enough to come up with an attractive freebie (outsource to elance, etc)

As far as in my experience, I am sure forums postings, blog commentings and social bookmarkings are good methods to get quality backlinks. Those will lead you to top on google.

It depends on which page you want to rank. These kind of links are easy to get but not worth very much. For instance I have my doubts if it is possible to get PR6 or more with this kind of links.
For some search terms one needs better links. Links from relevant high PR pages. If you don´t have some of yourself, you have to buy them.

Do all things Chris mentioned above - those all work well. ALso create good content that will get others to exchange links with you. I get several link exchange requests weekly for one of my debt related sites.

You can also create short ebook reports on your topic and submit those to download sites or even software.

I did not mean that these kind of links do not work. But people often target only search terms with no more than 10,000 competitors in "". These links work but the reality is that for the better keywords you don´t get around buying links. Google does not like this, but that´s the way it is.
Nearly no one is mentioning buying links here, but it´s a part of SEO reality and without it the discussions are not complete.
