Are these backlinks a problem?

Not long ago, I linked to a page of a website which I considered to be relevant to my niche.

Now, I notice that, although I did not link to them, over 600 pages of that website are also pointing to me but, so far as I can see, all or most of these 600+ pages are not relevant to my niche.

Is this something I should be worried about? Could Google penalize me?

I was under the impression that backlinks must be relevant to whatever you're doing.

Most likely it will only help you. What you don't want is to get a bunch more links from unrelated or low quality sites. Just keep building links, and make sure you have some level of quality in your plan.

You do not need to worry about it, Try to get more related backlinks from other sources too, then there will be Quality backlinks as well as already you have 600+ links, so, more QUANTITY too will be there, Google will love your site then and will visit very often and will give it's heart for you

...however, you have to makesure, there are no SPAMMY links or links from bad neighbourhood

I don't think you need to worry. Anybody can link to your site. You have no control over that, but make sure that you are linking with quality and relevant sites, to score some points with SEs.
