Yeah, I used to think that way too.

Let me just say that to me this is all a numbers game at the moment. Once I get out of that sandbox or whatever, if my sites hit the top spots all across the board - as they currently rank on the Caffeine beta - I'm going to be more than happy.

And I will repeat the whole process at least * 365 over the next 365 days.

High PR authority links from related websites are very hard to get. Or expensive. At least for mini sites.

Perhaps it is some kind of a penalty, as you said... I was thinking the same. That can't be bad though, I don't mind waiting a month or so if it means top spots for all of my keywords. Though I may have to slow down a little bit. Perhaps do some testing with Ezine/GoArticles.

I normally build links from a) profiles b) do-follow SBs c) web 2.0 blog posts and d) article directories (3-4 quality directories). So its not just 600 SB or directory links pointing to the same page.

Btw, I found the "soc" numbers on MNF to be highly inaccurate. Around half of my target keywords have a soc of 300-5000, the other half are 5-30 - all rank the same, more or less (like page one position 6 for soc 20; position 8 for soc 5000).

Maybe it could also be from the manual review and penalization....I dunno....

Part of the reason why I take those keywords and look further into them. Im finding alot of keywords that MNF has in the yellow or red that after physically looking at the websites and doing further analysis that indeed I could rank for those phrases

Me too man, I've been going crazy writing articles this whole week. Within the first day of writing, Ezine made me a platinum member lol. I have about 25 sites. This back linking method seems to not be working yet. My sites are all stuck in the same spot or have lowered. I just need patience I guess.

Lots of my sites are not even getting indexed too and it's been over a week, I've pinged them, bookmarked them, wrote articles, you name it. When I check AW stats most of them say Google bot has visited the site, yet they're still not indexed.

The only thing I hate about doing this is waiting! When I'm pumped and excited to get this going Google makes me wait! I want to build more sites, submit more articles, but I can't tell which sites need more backlinks since none of them are moving. Once I start to actually make decent progress I am sure I won't mind anymore.

D3t0x, I'm 100% completely in the same boat as you. It sucks. Really, sucks. I've been going hard at this for two weeks (I'm laid off at the moment - so, yea, I have been) with nothing to show for.

I haven't given up, I've got to get this to work.

Funny thing I had one site I registered, threw content up on did everything I was supposed to do and brushed it off to the side and didn't have ANYTHING linked to this site. (no articles had been approved yet)

So guess which site gets indexed the fastest? The site I didn't link a bloody single thing toward.

Then the one site I was working pretty hard core with in terms of articles took the longest to get indexed, I was working hardest at this particular one because of the potential results. It's the feeling of fighting a brick wall. But it finally did get indexed - directly after within the same day of tossing a couple random SB's at it. Then the day afterwards googlebot finally crawled the pages aside from it just acknowledging the domain existed.

And now, I've got quite a good deal of articles with only about half showing as back links yet and only a quarter of those showing up with the correct anchor text linking back to my sites.

My sites have shown up and have only been slipping. One of my sites was ping ponging back and forth before it began a gradual descent. The rest just descended.

So yea I'm pumped and not looking for a get rich quick thing. I'm working at it. I understand it requires work. I'm not afraid of work. I've actually got a pretty good work ethic. Hell the only days I ever took off work from my previous job of 10 years was when the wife was giving birth. That's not a joke either lol.

So yea. Life would be so blissful if back links started to pop up. I took Johns suggestions about where he talks about the article directories as well too.

I do have one niche site I made in early 2008 and whenever I check in on adsense and I see a little bit of something show up I get all bloody excited and check my adsense channels expecting something is finally going to start showing up and it's that blasted early 2008 niche site of mine.

I'll keep at it. Not like I have anything else to do. But man. Results would be neat.

I "get" the whole snowball effect. But I'm behind the snowball trying to get it to move. If it budged I'd be so excited.

I am thinking about promotion too, i have a website that ranks 10 for the main keyword, and i want to go higher, but without taking risks to drop in others pages.

About article marketing, i have one big problem, i write in french, so, no authority websites like ezinearticles. I have found 5 article directories with PR3, one with PR4, and i just have goarticles with a PR6 where i can write in french (maybe you know other directories that allow foreign writers?)

So, what would you do if you were in my case? I rewrite my article and submit in all directories? Or i focus only on one? If i write 10 articles on the same site, that will count like 10 BL?

Thanks.

I'm currently working on some articles to send to the article directories. Unfortunately, my current site is built around a 4-keyword phase; which rules out Ezine Articles.

Have used GoArticles and just signed up for ArticlesBase; but after further research, i've discovered that ArticlesBase is a nofollow site and will get little benefit from submitting my articles there.

Can anyone recommend any quality article directories that can pass some link-love onto our little sites?

Thanks

Yes, waiting is a big part of the game. This is why I do not worry over
any site I work on.

I do not think about how soon it gets indexed, or how fast it climbs in
rankings.

I find a niche, build a site, start getting my backlinks, then start another
site, so on and so forth.

Some sites rank very fast, others take a month, then longer to hit those
main keywords.

Some sites never hit those main keywords.

This game is more mental than anything, because the search engines
are unpredictable beyond basic SEO.

It's great that you are excited and are working towards something,
but give it a good 6 months to reach any appreciate goals.

If I were starting from scratch again, I would set a 1-year goal to
work hard on my sites, SEO & article marketing, then evaluate
my progress.

Of course, a 1-year stopping point to evaluate is not realistic for
many people, because they want to make sure something is working.

I just have total confidence in my work, so perhaps a 12-week point
would be better for most.

Hi everyone,

So many experienced people are here. Unfortunately I’m only beginner.

I've started my IM journey learning Dreamwever and Photoshop. So far I’ve created one website which is too big and takes too much of maintenance.

John’s method attracts me very much and I would like to follow but my problem is that I'm missing one thing in terms of site building - a sidebar with background color. Maximum what I could achieve is bgcolor in part of sidebar WITH content and NOT on whole height of it. In my first site I'd to cheat and use white bg so it doesn't show but with John’s method it won't work, site will look too primitive and won't look business like at all.

So, my question is - How to fix sidebar background color on full height of it?

I’m stuck, please help me out,

Thank you in advance.

John, can I ask you how much, on average, you make per mini site?

Because so far my experience has been:

Say a phrase gets around 3600 searches/month. I'm in position 6 on page one for that keyword. I noticed that I get around 20 visits/day for such keywords. Then another 5-10 visits for random (related) keywords. Total of 28 (avg.) visitors per day.

My avg. ctr is only 12%, but let's say I somehow manage to hit 25%. That would give me 7 clicks/day/website.

Currently I average around 0.24-0.27 cents per click. That is $1.75/day per website (assuming a 25% ctr. In reality I only make around 75 cents/day/website).

In the best case scenario, I would need over 100 mini sites to hit $200/day.

In reality (my experience so far after launching 20 sites) - around 260 sites. It might get better later on, once I hit the top 3 in Google for some of the keywords. Let's say I triple the traffic, but that is still over 85 mini sites to hit $200/day.

Now let's assume that I manage to get the avg. ctr (across all of my sites) to around 25% (double) - thats 45 mini sites to reach $200/day.

This is assuming:

1. I'm targeting keywords that avg. 3600 searches/month.
2. I rank in the top 3 for at least 70% of my keywords.
3. I make an avg. of $0.26/click.
4. My avg. ctr is at least 25%.

That is a quite a mission. Could anyone else whos actually working at this share their experience? Not theoretical, but first hand, real life, tried and tested experience...

final note: I have no problem launching 50 or even 100 sites over a period of time. What bothers me is the fact that I'm completely relying on Google, and if something happened to my Adsense account, 2-3 months of hard work, well, you know.

Thanks for the questions.

First of all, you are right - you are relying on Google and all other search
engines. And if that bothers you and prevents progress then my suggestion
is to enter the paid-advertisement area, which many millions of dollars are made
daily.

Second, as I've mentioned before, there is no "average" income that all
sites make.

Some sites make $1 and change, others are making up near $300 per
month.

All were approached the same way, but the results vary and cannot really
be predetermined.

Someone posted on this thread already, that, this business is like playing
the lottery (but with better odds). And you never know which domains
are going to hit the jackpot.

If anyone's stuck for keyword ideas, a paid service that's pretty good is "InstaCash Keywords" from Travis Sago (Mr. "Bum Marketing") and Matt Davis. Each day they deliver topic ideas with low-competition keyword lists. It costs $47/month, but there's a 7-day trial for $5. I've certainly gotten some niche ideas that I wouldn't have thought of from them...

Why don't you mock a quick template from dreamweaver.. it's not hard to make a quick template and export the graphics from photoshop.

OK, I'm not an expert, but there are two solutions I got to work.
I'm guessing you are using a CSS template - doesn't matter what that means

You can:
1) Use a table for your main setup of two columns, one for the content one, for the right hand sidebar. Set the column on the right hand side to have the correct background color or whatever the term is and it just works.

2) Continue using what you are using. Create a graphic, a single rectangle of one or more pixels wide and, and set it to the background of the <div> that contains BOTH the main and the sidebar.

Let's say your main window is 760 pixels wide and side bar is 160 of those pixels wide. The graphic is white for the leftmost 600 pixels (760 minus 160) and green (or whatever sidebar color you want) for the rightmost 160 pixels. Then you apply so that it repeats vertically.
I use adobe elements to create my graphic with some trouble

In my CSS file I have:

/*==== mainpage container ===*/
#maincontain {width:760px; background:#ffffff url('images/backgroundimage.jpg' repeat-y) }

They say it in more detail here:
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/fauxcolumns/;}

Using a Table is WAY easier. CSS sucks in many ways.
Figuring this out wasted a few hours!

Good job.

I just got my first site up today.

Makes me feel like a slacker but I just recently discovered this thread and picked up the ebook.

I mostly do ecommerce but I'm going to do 2 sites a week for a month or so and see how it goes. If the results are good, I will increase production.

If you have left me any keywords

Or better yet, how about 1 site a week.

I'm getting ready to update the course with a new action plan, to
slow down the link building a bit.

Just some feedback from my customers, as this is not about how
"many" sites you have, but how well they are promoted.

Hey there:
What indicators tell you that one of your sites has no future no matter how hard you work on it?
That it is a miserable failure that deserves to be deleted?
In such case, is it possible to modify the name of the domain to start with a new product from scratch?

When you have a list of candidates (different products) after doing Kw research, how do you know which one is the best and so on?

If I choose a KW and .com, .org and .net are taken, What is preferable doing: adding a suffix or going for .info domain?

Thank you

Thank you, John...this solidifies the track I have been going down and will continue building niche sites. I'm using Wordpress and Heatmap theme which really rocks for adsense and configurability.

You can't "modify" a domain name. You could register a new one, but that's basically a new site.

If you have a list of good candidates, do them all.... it's not hard, just takes time. Then let performance tell you which one is best!

Avoid .info, stick to the well-known TLDs like .com, .net, .org and whatever country code you're used to seeing.

Add another word after the keyword then go for a .com is more prefered than going for a .info.

Well I'm pretty happy now. Just hit 10th position on the first page for a keyword searched 8,100 times a month with no back links or anything lol. Who knows if it will hold up though!

I see no reason why this would not work, but I don't think that it would necessary to do it to the extent mentioned in the thread. You would probably get decent results by using 3-5 of the listed sites.

Yeah, i will not follow the list. A lot of web 2.0 services here arent for foreign languages, so i will start with wordpress and blogger that allow french writing.

Since some of you are using wordpress, I think you may be interested in this thread. You would not want to do all that work and be wondering what is going on.

Who has set up a self hosted wordpres site in the last few days?

Hey maybe John or someone else could answer this.

My mini site finally got ranked in the 1st position for my main keyword. When I search google using Safari my site comes up 1st on the first page.
Then I searched using Firefox and my site ranks on the 8th page of google.

What exactly is going on with that?

I know people want to make money fast, but the reality is with seo,
things take some time.

Age plays a part, a good idea is to register many domains now, put up
a home page and let it sit and age like fine wine.

Also I have noticed since I started using add-on domains, that since my
main domain on my hosting account is 3+ years and has many articles,
that that age and size may carry over. Add-on domains get indexed pretty quick.

But either way the more sites you make and the more content you add,
the more income you can potentially make with adsense.

I have a site that is 3+ years old it was avg. $9.00 a day for the month of Aug. 2008, I started adding articles in the fall 2008 and getting some links.

Now aug 1st 2009 to today that one site avg. $25.00 a day.
The site is only a pr 1.

You can make more money with any site by adding articles and getting more links.

Also important, use google sitemaps, that site was stuck at 150-160 pages indexed, now it is up to 214 pages indexed after installing google sitemaps.

Where will your business be 5 years from now, get those domains aging and start adding content.

It's called personalized search. Google customizes your search results. You "hack" your browser (especially Firefox) to offer a Google search with this feature turned off. Or get a Google Adwords account and use the ad preview tool.

just sign out of your google account, gmail, adsense account.

I have all my google accounts under one username and password,
so if I login into adsense, or gmail, or webmaster tools etc.

then my personalized search will be active if I search, when I want to check
rankings, I just sign out.

I know I've already answered this a couple of times, but everyone's
definition of "failure" is different. All of my sites become profitable, but
then again I've been doing this for a while now.

So I personally would never delete a domain, however if you are working
your tail off and the earnings never see anything steady, then you may
want to move on.

No keyword is best, there are millions of them. You just decide, "Ok,
this week I'm going to build and launch this 'tomatoe juice' website."
