and my head is seriously spinning now. well the top level domain has backlinks, the page that is indexed and is #1 does not.

It may have backlinks pointing to it via a 301 re-direct. Alternatively, if the top level domain has enough backlinks and it's not a overly competitive term that may suffice.

I don't look for or have any backlinks to my sites at all and I have pages come up on the first page of Google search results all the time. Spend your time building pages instead of looking for links. |

yeah, if you type the domain as the leyword on google, it will be #1
