Default How .gov/.edu links help in SEO?

I heard that .gov/.edu backlinks are more valuable. How that is possible? Does google give any special points for those links even if the links are from not related niche? Also, As far as my knowledge, I could not find a place to leave my link on .gov/.edu sites, even on blogs? How you all are placing your links on those sites?

It's a matter of Google, theoretically, trusting them more. Sometimes this is true and sometimes not.

.edu links are becoming less and less valuable as student entrepreneurs figure out they can sell a link on their .edu hosted 'school blog' for beer money.

.gov probably has higher trust value but they don't link out that much although there are some places you might be able to still slip in a link.

Thats very well put and i agree totally, If you search for good quality respected links on any TLD it will have the same effect imo , .gov and .edu links arnt always easy to get with the same niche as your site, Your better off looking for related , good qaulity links

yes, .gov or .edu links are having more value than other values in the eye of google, However as you said, it is hard to get links from .gov or .edu sites.... Mostly we have to do link exchanges or etc...... site:.gov, site:.edu will help you to find some sites.....

Do you think that Google counts .edu and .gov forum links?

The Trust and Authority of a site giving a link does make it more valuable. I see no reason why a link in an edu forum would be seen much differently than one from the edu site itself.

I have read SEOMoz say that trust and authority is passed even by a nofollow link. I don't recall if they added any research to back that up tho.

There is, I feel, enough testing done to establish high trust links can out preform many more lower grade links.

One recent blog post claimed many of their newer clients who could only get to page 2-3-4, even when they had a good number of links got much better results after adding more highly trusted site links and claimed page one is often elusive without some. Probably true from my estimation.

I use the Firefox plugin Search Status to show MozRank for quick trust estimates.

I have had great results with both personally. The fact that it is a .EDU or a .GOV is just a small part, as they can not be registered by just anyone they are automatically a bit above par in terms of authority.

The real value comes from the fact that most universities are PR7 or higher, so they are truly very high authority.

In addition it is really difficult to get links on either of these types of sites where you can get .coms all day long.

Some people disagree but I have been using them for a while now and it takes way less of them to see far better results in terms of both SE rankings and PR at updates.

Search in Google using these search strings.

- “keyword phrase”+inurl:blog site:.edu
- “keyword phrase”+inurl:blog site:.gov
- site:.edu inurl:blog “keyword phrase”
- site:.gov+wp-admin
- site:.gov+blog
- site:.gov+comment.php
- site:.gov+”submit site”
- site:.gov+”submit your site”
- site:.gov+”add url”
- site:.edu inurl:blog “keyword” “comment”
- site:gov – ”you must be logged in” -”comment closed”
- site:edu – ”you must be logged in” -”comment closed”

I hope you will be able to find out the places for linking your site.

Hi there,

Google loves backlinks from Edu/Gov sites because these sites are authoritative sites which they really depend on.

Google wants their search result to be as of high quality and they will consider a backlink from this kind of website.

Remember that backlinks are also considered as votes or recommendation so if you have a backlink from an authoritative site then your links will surely be valuable and counted.

I think the Google trust the .gov and .edu sites more than other because its very difficult to get linked with these sites and are under control of government authorities and also are smap free. .Gov and .Edu sites will only give room to the trusted and approved sites on their sites.

Quite true. However I have had good experiences with some underground methods to obtain such linking. It can be a bit time consuming, and does not always work, but when it has, I have been able to rank client sites much higher in Google and other top engines, and it is usually within a month.

As others have indicated it really comes down to the fact that typically .gov/.edu domains are "authority" and "trusted" websites which give the links more weight in Google's eyes.
