I understand why it is more valuable to check the Google competitions in quotes, but wouldn't it be helpful to check your keyword strings BOTH with quotes and without quotes? Afterall, most internet surfers are not going to be using quotes when they do their searches. For instance, I would imagine when googling a keyword string without quotes, there are some popular sites that would rise up through the ranks even if the search term wasn't worded exactly the same. Am I missing something, or shouldn't both checks factor in? |

Yes both are important. With quotes because it tell how many people are targeting that phrase, on purpose or not. Without, like you say, because most search without. You want to see what they see and why those site rank well. |

People need to really understand the whole "quotes or no quotes" thing. We all know that regular searchers don't typically use quotes. Do your keyword search in Google to get an idea of how many other pages are focusing on those keywords. Make a note of that, then... throw that information away. The search in quotes is interesting, but not really all that useful. Personally, if I'm interested in which pages are actually "targeting" a set of keywords, I find an "allintitle" search more relevant. Now do a search in Google for your keywords WITHOUT quotes. Pay attention to the top 10 sites that come up in the Google results. Make a note of that, then... realize you are now looking at your REAL competition. The fact is, if you're not looking to land on the first page of Google without quotes, then (generally speaking) you're not approaching your SEO process correctly. Once you do your search -- without quotes -- then you need to determine whether or not you can "beat" those ten listings. If you can't, then you should probably consider a different set of keywords. I don't care if 100 pages come up for a search in quotes or 100,000,000 pages come up for a search in quotes. The fact of the matter is, as an online marketer, you're shooting for page one in Google and nothing less. Whether or not there are a dozen more pages or a million more after the first ten really shouldn't be relevant. |
