We've all seen - and maybe bought - ebooks on selling. You know the ones, with titles like "How To Sell Million Books In A Week!" or "Secrets To Selling Ice To Eskimos" and the sort. Some are rooted in a deep understanding of sales methodology and buyer psychology. Most are junk, and are simply a rehash of information the author read or heard about somewhere else, and has not even bothered to put to the test before writing about it. Here are the 5 biggest lies spread around by these ebooks on selling. Selling Is Easy Yeah, right. That's why every small business owner with an ugly looking website is actually raking in a few thousand bucks daily in sales! Selling is not easy until you master the intricacies. And depending on your skills, previous sales experience and attitude, this could take a short time or a long while. And even then, it can be heart-breaking and frustrating when you get started. Selling Is Instant No way. Not unless you are already a sales superstar - and even then, it depends on whether you can find a hungry crowd to sell to. Any selling process depends on identifying a target audience that is eager to buy your product or service. You then need to get your marketing message in front of them, overcome all objections, and close the sale. Try and rush this sequence and you'll face serious sales resistance. Selling Is For Everyone Maybe this is not a blatant lie, but there are surely some types who find selling a lot easier while others struggle. Don't read ebooks on selling and start thinking you're a sales 'natural'. You may be, but then again you may not. The good news is that even if you can't sell your way out of a paper bag, you can team up with top-class sales people and still skyrocket your business. Selling Is Profitable Not always, and not all selling is profitable. There are some products and services that are practically impossible to profit from. And others where you deliberately sacrifice profitability for other ends. While sales professionals understand this from experience and knowledge, this discovery can be devastating to a new sales person who is stunned by the contrarian finding that you can sell and yet not make a profit. Selling Is Instinctive Once again, this may be true for a small minority of 'natural salespeople' but most definitely is not a general rule. Selling, like many others skills, requires a lot of study, training, practice and honing to reach perfection. And selling is a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional thing involving the most complex variable ever - the human mind. Keep these points in mind when you next read ebooks on selling. They aren't deliberately trying to mislead you, but things aren't as rosy, easy and sweet as they sometimes try to paint them. You can succeed at selling - but there's a price to pay first. Be prepared to do what's necessary, and you will win. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr.Mani is an Internet infopreneur who teaches email marketing and infoproduct creation.
