To use a pen name, or not to use a pen name. That's the question that's often on the minds of a lot of aspiring eBook authors and publishers. It often comes down to a matter of personal preference. But there are some important rules you should familiarize yourself with.

For example, if you're someone who barely graduated from high school, it's not advisable that you select a pen name that includes extra credentials such as a doctorate. Bad move. What about changing your gender? Sometimes authors believe that their target audience might be more receptive to a publication written by a member of a particular gender. This is an interesting question, and one that can best be resolved by asking yourself this question: am I materially misrepresenting myself by changing my gender? For some authors, the answer is no. For others, it's yes.

Here's one approach that might help you sleep better at night. Do the writing. Create the eBook yourself. Then, find a member of the gender you're considering using for the pen name you're thinking about associated with the eBook you're creating. Have that individual read and make comments regarding any edits that are believed to improve the gender-specific perspective of your publication. Implement those edits, and that's it. You can now more reasonably use a pen name that reflects a gender other than your own because you've had the publication vetted. This is far more than most people would do, but as you can see, it's a a step you can take if you want to be especially thorough.

The bottom line is this. For years, authors have use pen names. It's quite common. To the extent you decide that it make sense to use a pen name for your eBook, rest assured that you're joining a very long tradition of authors who have decided to do this. There's nothing inherently unethical or illegal about using a pen name, but here's my ultimate advice: if you want to really be sure if you can use a pen name for your next eBook project, get the advice and counsel of a licensed attorney or solicitor in your area.
