The Debate That Will Never End - How Many Pages Does An EBook "Need" To Be These Days Anyway?

When I first got started in the eBook publishing business, I really thought that I had to deliver an eBook that was at least 350 pages in length. Yeah, I was coming to this with the mentality that for my product to have any real value, it had to be extremely long. Thankfully I ran a few surveys and conducted a handful of experiments that revealed some interesting facts.

People typically want the information their purchasing to be succinct and to the point. No fluff, no filler, no junk. Just give them what they need and want. As a result, it's not that unusual for a well written electronic book to be far less than 150 pages. This is especially true in niche markets. For instance, if you publish something that talks about a technique for losing 14 pounds before a wedding -- people don't want or expect a 350 page manual. Give them a nice 45 page guidebook that covers everything they need to know, and that leaves nothing out. You can even use a slightly larger font size so that people can easily read what they've purchased on their computer without hurting their eyes.

Right now you might have a great idea for an electronic book. What's stopping you from creating and publishing it? If you're like most people, you might be worried that you need to make it extremely long to have any value in the mind of the customer. That's just not supported by the facts. Sure, a 2 page publication is going to probably rub people the wrong way -- but a 45 page guidebook that gives the topic a solid treatment will nearly always be preferable to a 350 page tiny font-sized tome on the subject.
