Using Facebook for marketing your small business may seem a bit scary at first, but it's a really great way to build up your brand, get more fans and more prospects. In this article I am going to go over a few facebook marketing tips that will help you understand how to promote your business on Facebook without resorting to spamming your friends and family.
Using Facebook For Marketing - Start With The Right Goals!

When learning how to market on Facebook it may be tempting to just start posting your business links everywhere, hoping to get some clicks but it just doesn't work like that. Your long term goal should be to build a good reputation online, build up a loyal community of followers, drive traffic to your website and build your mailing list.
Keep these in mind when you use Facebook and you'll reap the rewards.
Facebook Fan Page Marketing Strategy

The image above shows the strategy I use for building my fan page and fan loyalty. I'll walk you through each step to give you an insight into how you can implement this too.
Growth - Get More Fans

This will be a little tricky to start with if you are totally new to Facebook because you need to start the ball rolling. The best way to start building your fan page is to email your existing prospects and let them know that you've just opened a page. If you don't have a mailing list yet, try writing a blog post about your new fan page to direct some people to it.
Once you have 25 fans you can customize the url of your page. Make sure it will be easy to remember because you can't change it later! Your fan page url will now look something like this with your fan page name at the end - Rachael Macgregor | Facebook
Once you even have just a few fans coming in, you are ready to really start using Facebook for marketing...

Engagement - It's A Fight For Their Attention

You need to stand out and catch your fans attention with whatever you post. Your fans will see your content in their newsfeed but will only pay attention to it if you can draw them away from everything else on their home page!
Think carefully about the headline of any blog post you link to, or notes you write so that they engage your fan. Post photos that will make them ant to click, be mysterious and don't tell them the whole story til they click your link...get creative.
No matter how good your fan page is, if you can't get your fans to return to it it's pointless!
Relationship - Make Them Feel Good

Now that you've caught your fan's attention and they've clicked through to your page/note/photo/link you need to build the relationship more. Share snippets of your life with them as well as great content so that you create a bond with them. People love to know who's behind the business so let yourself come through in everything you do.
Thank fans that comment on your posts or share your stuff. Make them feel welcome. Allow them to post comments on your wall and participate. It's not about you...it's about how they FEEL around you. Make them want to come back for more!
Research - One Of The Great Things About Facebook

Back in the days before this wonderful thing called social media, it cost companies a fortune to run surveys and find out what their customers wanted. Now with Facebook, Twitter and other social networks even small business owners can get valuable information on what their prospects needs are so that they can better fulfill them.
Almost every day I ask my fans a question about their business so that I can get to know them more. This is a great way to get people interacting and learn what your fans need.
I also use a free service called Survey Monkey to put together more detailed surveys and collect more information that I can analyze over time.

Value - As If By Magic

Now that you've researched what your prospects need you can lead with value that will help you to build more trust with them and lead them to your product(s). The funny thing is that your fans just told you what they want, and when you produce it they will LOVE you for it. It works like magic every time.
Think about the problems that your prospects face (which you should know after your research) and write a blog post, make a video or free pdf on how they can solve that problem. How To's, Top 5′s/10′s and step-by-step guides work well.
At the end of your blog post or video make sure you tell your visitors what the next step is and give them a link to your capture page or sales page (capture pages best!).
Feedback - Did you get it right?

Ask your fans for feedback on your fan page. Every time a fan 'likes' or comments on something you've done, it will show to THEIR friends, creating more exposure for you. You also get to find out if you delivered what they needed or if they still have more questions.
Interaction is what your fan page needs to live. It eats interaction for breakfast. If you can get your fans interacting and leaving feedback each day your fan page will grow up to be very big and happy
Call To Action - Get Your Fans To Grow Your Page For You!

Now that you have a small fan base (even if it's just 5 people!) that are interacting with your page, reading your content, liking and commenting and telling you what they want, you can get them to help you page grow.
Simply ask. Every few days remind people to share the page with their friends, or to share the content that you are sharing. You will find that as you go through the cycle your Facebook page will start to grow by itself. This is the great snowball effect that starts to happen...which is great! You will find that soon you have a few hundred fans, then one day you will wonder how you are suddenly getting new fans every day, all day!
I've been using facebook for marketing for the last 6 months and on testing the above strategy (and more which you can find out about below) I was able to get 900 fans in just 10 days without touching my existing fan page, list or website.
