There is no doubt about it; social media is one of the most happening things in the internet world. People seem to can't get enough of these social media sites that they seem to be on it everyday and all the time.

For SEO, it's also a great way to get an audience for your web page. It's literally where the people are so you might as well put your webpage links there.

Some people will disagree with me though because you are not completely sure that these sites will get you the audience that you need. Well, there are factors you have to consider when you do your SEO work for these sites.

Here are some factors that you have to take note when working on social media SEO:

For Twitter:

How many people follow you? - the more followers you have on Twitter the more credible you are. Your value on Twitter will then be related to your URL.

Who follows you? - let's admit it, with the millions of people on Twitter, it's hard to tell if these people will really share your link to others in their own network. The high value followers are best to ensure your links are retweeted.

How do you relate to your followers? - get followers that are related to your field and who might be interested with your tweets and content. On Twitter, you find value if your follower can relate to your tweets.

How many retweets? - the more high value followers you have the more will your tweets be retweeted. This will help your link spread through different networks not only within in your niche and it will improve your number of followers too.

For Facebook:

Your number of likes for your page - Facebook allows you to make pages that would be easier for companies, businesses even prominent people, which is very much different from the regular profile. Your credibility and potential of getting your website shared is through these people who like your page and share it to the same niche or even greater.

Your comments - You will confirm your hit to these Facebook users if other than liking your posts, they comment on your post. These comments are indicators if they really will visit your website.

All other Social Media Sites:

Positive and Negative Publicity - Use tools that will pickup more positive mentions of your web page more than negative ones. There is one, Radian6 but it isn't quite accurate

Number of Mentions - High value comes from the visibility of your web page links on these social media. You can use HowSociable to test your rating on how frequent you are mentioned in these sites.
