If you are one of those that think you can push a button online and be making money overnight, then think again. Forget the hype in sales letters. Remember, these are sales letters; they are designed to do one thing, sell. They are usually designed to bring out the most optimistic and extraordinary scenarios. It is still worth noting that more than 90% of businesses fail.

Fact is, there is not a single thing online that you can set up today, be making money tomorrow, and not have to touch it again and be making the same income month after month. There is always some maintenance or level of work involved. For me, 'www' stands for 'work, work, and work'. If you want to build a real business online, you will have to work for it. Forget the 4-hour workweek. If you want a 4-hour week, guess what? You will have to hire people to do the work for you. And that costs money. There is just no way around it.

For instance, say you set up a Google AdWords campaign today and it's making you affiliate commissions. Is it really possible to just leave it alone for months and years and be making money? That's almost impossible. You could possibly leave it up for a few weeks and not touch anything and still be profitable, but after some time, things happen. New competitors enter and push up the price, Google changes it's system and guidelines, or your affiliate product becomes less popular as new competing products enter the market. These things happen all the time.

How about search engine optimization? Can you set up a site, get it to the top of the search engine rankings and just forget about it while it makes you money? Sure, this has happened for some people, but for the majority of people, this is just not the case. Google regularly changes its algorithms every few months, so very few websites stay where they are for years and years. And even if your website has been at the top for years, who's to say what will happen in the future? We can't. When we rely on Google, they are in control, not us.

The point is, online marketing is about work. Nothing much has really changed. When you combine work and the automation that the Internet can provide (you make money even when you're not working), it can provide a really comfortable income for anyone willing to put in the effort.
