First off, let me start off by saying that affiliate marketing is fantastic. But it is much less profitable to do it than if you have your own list. If you have your own list and combine it with affiliate marketing, you can create a super profitable business. Why do I say that? Read on.

If you're marketing affiliate products without building your own business (your own websites, your own lists, your own customer base), then stop right now! Stop building other people's businesses and start building your own. Build your own subscriber lists.

If you send someone to an affiliate link and they subscribe to the merchant's list, and not yours, you lose out! So you've got to get them on to your list first before you market the affiliate products to them. This way, you are building your business first, before promoting other people's products. Plus, you can leverage on the repeat traffic you will get when you contact your subscribers through follow-up emails.

Instead of writing articles and promoting affiliate programs directly in the links (which some article directories don't allow anyway), send your visitors to a name squeeze opt-in page. This is a short page designed to build your list only, and not sell anything. The selling comes later on when you have got them on to your list. Because they have now joined your list, you can repeatedly promote affiliate products to them, if you so choose to. And that's a lot better than a one-off direct hit to an affiliate link!
