If I didn't answer the questions or responded to my subscribers when they email-ed me, I would have lesser sales, no doubt about it. It only takes a few minutes a day to answer a few emails and yet that equals to a few thousand extra dollars per year that I otherwise wouldn't have! Simply put, by communicating with your subscribers, you increase your list responsiveness and that makes them far more likely to buy from you.
Especially in a recession, it's even more important that you communicate with people on your list and build up that trust and rapport. You've got to be a cut above the other marketers in your niche by showing that you personally respond helpfully to your subscribers' emails.
One simple way to start the ball rolling is to send a survey to your subscribers. You can create a simple one using Survey Monkey or create an advanced one using Ask Database. The simplest way to do it is to just type your survey in your email or ask a question like "What Is Your Most Urgent Question About ______?" and then take it from there. When you receive the answers, it will be a good idea to create an information product based on solving those problems and needs that your subscribers have.
