Are Most Social Media Managers Worthless?

This might ruffle a few feathers but it needs to be said. There is so much talk about why businesses need to be involved with social media marketing. But, with that being said, should you hire a social media manager to help you out? The answer may surprise you.

The reality is, most social media managers today are worthless to your business and here's why. The major reason is that they don't have experience actually building a profitable business using social media or the internet.

In fact, most of these managers make their money managing. They haven't build a local free-standing business themselves with the web so you couldn't possibly expect them to help you aggressively grow yours.

Yes, you can hire someone on as an employee, but you'll have to train them. If they do have experience, what do they know? Yes, they may be able to post on Facebook for you but is that really what makes you money. Nope.

Social media is just one leg of internet marketing. You also have to know about market research, SEO, press release marketing, article marketing, video marketing, back-link building, Google Places, etc...

To find an employee that knows how to strategically implement all of these things is near impossible. If you do find someone, expect to pay at minimum of $6,000 / month. That's actually being conservative, too.

Quite honestly, that type of investment would cripple the average mom and pop business.

So, some social media managers are not totally worthless, you just have to find the right one you're looking for. If you want aggressive growth, you need to find someone that's sold millions of dollars worth of products and services from the internet.

Be careful of these run-of-the-mill staffing agencies that promise big returns. This never happens because they don't have experience building lucrative social media campaigns for small businesses.
