Pay per click advertising definitely gets traffic faster than article marketing. A campaign which I set up in just a few hours got over 200 visitors every day for $0.08 average per click. Pretty decent! That's the sort of instant power that PPC engines like Google AdWords gives. In terms of scalability, article marketing is definitely not as fast, but you can scale the method up too. Simply think 'more' and 'better'. Write more articles and submit more than your competition. Many people think in terms of quality or quantity - I say do both. That way, you get the benefits of both and you just end up getting more traffic than other people. However, the thing with article marketing is that it is going to take time to reach the level of 200-500 visitors per day. At the very least, it will take months. Even if you outsource all your articles, your writers need time to write them, and nobody is going to be able to write hundreds legitimate, original articles within days (and those are the kind of numbers you need to get serious traffic from articles). With pay per click advertising, you can set up a campaign in hours and get 200 visitors per day at click prices of below $0.10 like what I'm doing, if you have the right keywords. Just use services like Spyfu or Keyword Spy to see what keywords your competitors are spying on, then see if it would be suitable for your marketing strategy. Here is a secret for AdWords: For keywords that get high traffic numbers, you should try to get your ad on the first page of results, but it's not necessary to be in Top 3. Aim for click costs of $0.05-$0.50 for the first page of results, but avoid the number one spot, because that spot gets the most compulsive clicks that don't result in sales and lower your conversions. People who click on the top 3 ads are usually more compulsive and fickle and this will cause you to have lower conversions. So position your ads in the lower positions, but try to get on the first page. But you'll want to do both article marketing and pay per click advertising just to increase your overall traffic!
