Right out of the gate, I want to tell you that that the hands down best way to build a list is via article marketing. It is my favorite way of driving traffic to my websites, and for a good reason. The leads that I get from article traffic consistently buy more products from me than from other sources of traffic. Simply put, articles generate the most targeted sort of traffic on the Internet.

Another powerful way to build a list is through joint ventures. However, they are not reliable and are not long-term. In other words, you can't depend on them to make your living because you are not in control for most of the process. If your joint venture partner doesn't mail out for you, you have no control over this.

Sometimes when you do a cross-promotion, you will also lose subscribers when you send out an email. So if you get 100 subscribers from your partner's promotion but you lose 50 subscribers from your email, technically you only gained 50 subscribers. So while joint ventures can be lucrative, it's not all rosy and it's a short-term thing that cannot be relied on.

But with articles, you are in control over how many articles you write, and how good the articles are. You can optimize your articles to achieve prime search engine rankings and reap the free traffic from there onwards. You can write articles that solve problems, and this will generate a more targeted kind of list that will spend more money with your business instead of your competition.
