The reason why I use articles as one of my main traffic sources is because they work insanely well. What I did in the beginning when I was just a greenhorn marketer was that I started testing out various traffic sources (articles, pay per click, banner ads, classified ads), and I found out that articles consistently generated the most targeted traffic for me. And within article marketing, I found that only a few article directories would generate most of the traffic.

For direct traffic generation, you would want to submit your articles to only the best article directories. There is no point in submitting to hundreds of directories, because only a few will generate more than 90% of your results. So you're better off writing new articles to submit to the top 2 or 3 directories. Unless you are looking to building direct incoming links for search engine optimization, this is the strategy you are looking at if you want direct traffic.

Obviously, if articles don't suit your strength, or you don't like writing, you don't have to do them. If you can make pay per click advertising work or some other form of advertising work, make that your main strategy for traffic generation.

But if someone comes up to me and asks me how they can virtually get targeted traffic as soon as possible, then article marketing is one surefire way to do it. Keep in mind, though, that you don't want to just depend on articles for traffic. Personally, I have Adwords and I have joint ventures as additional sources of traffic just to diversify where my visitors are coming from and of course, to get ultimately more overall traffic.
