To Get Started Online You'll Need Great Mentor

By Celene Harrelson
Clueless? Where the heck do you learn how to get started online?

You want to get started online, to work from home and build an internet business. You want to spend more time with your family, have the freedom to do what you want when you want and to make your own decisions. In fact, you'd like you tell your boss where to get off! Whoa, slow down there! That's not a very wise thing to do when you are clueless about how to get started online. You might need a steady income to pay the mortgage until your internet ship can keep itself afloat.

Here's the deal. This is not something you can just wake up one day, tell your boss where to get off, hang your online business shingle and voila! you're an instant Internet success. Don't I wish...that sure would have saved me an awful lot of time, energy and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The fact is, building an internet business requires you to learn a whole new skill set. It takes study, education and practice. It takes a good teacher. So how do you find the right one?

First, make sure you know the difference between a teacher and a mentor.

Yes, there's a big difference. A teacher teaches information. We all know from experience in the classroom, whether it's our own experience or our children's that not all teachers are created equal. There are an awful lot of mediocre teachers both in the classroom as well as some who teach you how to get started online these days. Please don't misunderstand what I am saying, there are a number of excellent teachers out there, but you need more than a a good teacher. To get started online you need a teacher who is also a mentor. What's the difference? A mentor is not only a good teacher but someone who takes a sincere interest in your success. Huge difference. Huge.

How do you find a good mentor?

Unfortunately, you might have to kiss a lot of frogs... My suggestion is to read their blogs, start out with a free teleseminar or webinar and watch some of their videos. When you find one you resonate with, start with a smaller investment. Never purchase expensive training courses or long term programs without testing the waters first to make sure that the mentor is a good fit. Like the slick salesman who sold you that expensive pair of shoes that ended up causing a blister, you may wish you had chosen the less expensive comfy sneakers instead. Please don't misunderstand, there will come a time when you will need some more expensive shoes, just make sure you are buying them from the right store. No, I didn't change the subject - that was my version of an analogy. We are still talking about mentors.

I'm sure you have said this dozens of times...

...You get what you pay for. While there is a ton of free information on the internet, you are never going to learn everything you need to know without investing in some paid training and courses. Most great teachers and mentors give good content away all the time. We never give it all away. We save the best for our paid students and clients. Those who understand that to get started online and become a success, you have to invest in your self. Whoever coined the phrase the best things in life are free wasn't talking about Internet marketing training.

When choosing a mentor, look for someone who has had a certain level of success themselves, become a sponge and follow in their footsteps and do what they do. That doesn't mean to become a little clone copy cat. It means to use the same strategies and techniques they use and incorporate then into your niche. It's OK to model yourself after someone, but you still have to be you.

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

When you do find someone you really resonate with, who's teaching style is really working for you, stick with them and absorb all you can. It's OK to keep your eyes open for what others have to offer, but keep your eyes on the prize and learn all you can.

You will have many good teachers and trainers from the time you first get started online until your internet career is a raging success. Great mentors; you will only have a few, but if you choose well, that's all you'll need.
