Step 1 - Start With Google AdWords

Start out with Google AdWords. Please bear this mind: if you can't produce results on AdWords with a particular keyword, then it's likely you will get anything out of the same keyword with other pay per click search engines. AdWords gives you the most traffic around, so if it doesn't work there, it doesn't work anywhere else. Use AdWords as your main pay per click traffic driver, and also as your 'testing ground'.

Step 2 - Optimize Your AdWords Campaigns

Optimize your AdWords campaigns for greater effectiveness. Test your keywords (add new keywords, delete ineffectual ones), test your ad copy (split-test your ads), consider timing your campaigns to run only at certain times etc etc.

Step 3 - Branch Out To 'Lower Tier' Pay Per Click Search Engines

Once you have found some profitable keywords, branch out to the 'lower tier' pay per click search engines such as Yahoo Search Marketing, MSN Adcenter, Kanoodle, 7Search and many of the lower-tier engines. The combined power of these sites still comprises about 40% of the PPC traffic, so you'd want to tap on all of these.
