Which is more profitable: owning a membership website or building your own list of subscribers?

Definitely a membership site, of course, assuming those membership site members are paid members.

You can also build a free membership area using the Butterfly Marketing model and script, that's a very effective way to turn subscribers into affiliates to promote your site on autopilot for you.

Perhaps the optimal way to combine list building and a membership area is to build a list of subscribers, and make your membership as your lead product. You can promote this lead product as a one-time offer deal, or/and promote it in your automated follow-up emails.

Get 3 to 6 months worth of content ready and just plug the content in at the start of every new new month. If your site is doing well, create another 6 months worth of content. This allows you to concentrate on the important part of your business which is the marketing of the site itself.

Another model worth looking at is the autoresponder membership model that I first read about in one of John S. Rhode's reports. Basically, you set up a Paypal button on your site, and after payment, your customer is sent to a page with an opt-in form to subscribe to your paid customers list, where they can receive content from you automatically every week.
