To warm up your mailing list at the start, it is a good idea to send free reports and free information to your list. It's not hard to create free gifts to giveaway. You can create a short content-packed 5-10 page report or find ebooks with giveaway rights. Send your subscribers good free content and information to warm them up. Perhaps create a snazzy blog and make new posts, and tell your subscribers about it. Blogs are excellent tools for content publishing for a mailing list as well; you can send them a short note instead of a long content email which may not be read. It tends to be easier to read a blog post than a long email. Gradually start warming them up with more pre-selling emails, with content in the email, and a promotional link in the P.S. or/and in the middle of the email. Too much free content and your subscribers might become too conditioned to receive it. On the other hand, your paid offers may be gobbled up if you tend to provide solid information in many of your content emails. The balance I usually go with is 2 content emails: 1 promotional email. One possibility is separating your warm subscribers from your cold subscribers by starting a new list and telling your current list about it. The problem with this is that while this may have a good effect on conversion rates, opt-in rates and other less important numbers (than net profits), it might not really make a difference unless you are using Aweber (where the more subscribers you have, the more you have pay every month to maintain your account).
