Arrow Adsense - What are Channels and How Do You Use Them

You need to have a good understanding what channels are and how to use them in order to make money with AdSense. Why? Because seldom does a website work optimally when it's first launched. When you first launch your site, chances are there are going to be ways you could optimize your site to increase its earnings.

Channels will allow you to do that.

==> What Are Channels?

Channels are labels you can put on ads to determine how different types of the ad are performing. By using channels, you can determine exactly what placements are getting the best CTRs and optimize your ads over time.
They are like post-it notes you put on an object. On each post-it note is a description of the object. You can put as many post-its as you want on that object. Later on, you can look at the "best" objects and see what kind of post-its it has. When you compare it with other "objects" that are performing well, you can identify the post-its that are working and do more of that one thing.

==> An Example

To give a real example, let's say you create a large square ad with red hyperlink text, with Tahoma font that's positioned on the right.
You create three channels: Red, Tahoma, Right and Large Square.

You then run that ad, along with several other different ads on different pages. Or perhaps you rotate the ads over time, or use a rotator script to have the placements switched around randomly.

After a period of time, you come back to it and sort your click throughs by channels.

You see that red ads tended to get higher click throughs than other ads, but ads on the left performed better than ads on the right. The font seemed not to affect anything, and the large square performed the same as the small square.

Using this data, you'll now know to switch all your ads over to red colors and to place them on the left.

==> URL Channels

Whenever you setup a new website, make sure you add a URL channel. That's basically like setting up a site in AdSense so it'll track all its traffic separately.

==> How to Setup Channels

When you log into your AdSense account, go to "AdSense Setup." Click on "Channels" in the submenu.

Click on "Custom Channels" to add custom channels. Custom channels are the description-like tags that you use to track specific attributes of ads.
Make sure you also add a URL channel for your site, or else the stats won't be tracked on a domain level.

When you start using channels, it may seem difficult and confusing, but over time it'll become intuitive and simple. Channels will help you identify exactly what's working and what's not to increase your CTRs.
