There's only one main word you need to keep in mind with regards with article marketing - consistency.
Article marketing is simple. But it sure isn't easy!
How many people are willing to do what it takes to write 5 articles a day or even 10 articles a day? Very few. The percentage is maybe 5%. If you join this 5%, you will see some level of success.
You don't have to write articles on your own, you can write 2 a day, and outsource the other 2. That means you are submitting 4 articles a day, which is 120 articles a month and 1440 articles after just 12 months, definitely enough to create some serious traffic. The question is, are you willing to pay the price? It could be in terms of effort or money, but you have to pay a price.
I would keep affiliate marketing with articles focused to one product until you are making at least $1,000 or $2,000 a month online with it. Aim to achieve an income that you are comfortable with promoting that product, then move on to other products and duplicate your results with that those.
Sure, some might say you need to diversify.
Isn't the goal of article marketing to earn as much as possible (while having some fun)?
To do that, wouldn't you choose the best market that you see will bring you the maximum profits? So at this point there's no point in diversifying. Test the niches you are thinking of entering with 5-10 articles each. See which generates traffic and sales. Choose the niche with the best results.
Then move on to another niche.
Scaling - it's the secret to doubling or tripling your income. It's exactly what I have done in the last two months, scale my efforts, and my income as expected has doubled.
