I'm not sure if these are the basics that will get you started; these are more advanced tips. But they'll take you to the next level of article writing and really use it as a serious traffic generator:

1. The first rule is not to be obsessed too much about the quality of your articles. They have to be of good quality, but they don't have to Shakespeare literature, they just need to be readable and informative. That's the first thing to keep in mind.

2. Optimize your title and your article with your main keywords.

3. Submit your article everywhere you can. Here's what I do: I submit my articles to the top directories first, wait a few weeks, then submit to the 'lower-tier' directories. This gives the articles in the top directories time to get some search engine juice without receiving too much competition from each other.

4. Submitting to your own site is pretty much of no use unless you are generating traffic to your site.

5. Most article directories are accepting articles which are shorter than 300 words. And believe it or not, these articles work better than long 500-700 word articles (unless your articles are really interesting). We're all short on time and attention these days. If someone is submitting 500 word articles, he'd spend the same time and effort writing the articles as you are, but you will be submitting double the articles he does. And that means you are likely to be receiving double the traffic and sales he gets.

For the article directories which do require a longer word count, you can simply combine two articles which cover the same topics, and you'll have an instant article.

Hope that helps in your article marketing efforts!
