Taking your small business online is one surefire way to increase your business profits. Now, instead of just selling to your neighborhood, you can sell to a worldwide market. That is powerful in itself. So how exactly do you market your small business on the Internet and gain more sales?

The first thing you must do is decide who your target market is. Is it the fashion conscious youth? The well heeled business traveler? The avid baseball fan? Create a profile of who your customer is before you ever start doing any real advertising online.

Next, create a marketing plan for your online advertising. This is a key step. Decide where and how you are going to advertise. Personally, I use these methods to advertise my online business and they work well for me: classified ads, article marketing (submitting articles to article directories), forum posting, pay per click marketing and press releases. You must add two or three of these tactics at the minimum to your marketing arsenal.

Now, go and work on one these advertising sources. Yes, right now. Perhaps you can start with classified ads first. Once you've mastered that and are generating a considerable amount of traffic from it, move on to the next on your list. Keep on adding traffic generation streams until your small business is making some inroads online.

It's important also to test and track your advertising efforts. Test your headlines, your advertising copy, your colors and so on. Keep testing your elements to get better results from your web marketing.
