Online marketers who may have been putting off establishing a presence on Google+ should realize by now that they are missing out on lots of SEO benefits for their websites by doing so. Ever since the launch of Google's, 'Search Plus Your World,' update, which happened in January, Google+ profiles and business page relevant results are being placed above the regular search engine results for users who have and use a Google profile.

If you are smart and you've already got a presence on Google plus, you'll find some useful tips on how you can boost your website's search engine optimization by being active on G+.

1. Decide on a Google+ strategy and set some goals
Before you jump in take some time and decide what you want to get out of your efforts on Google+. Are you looking just to improve SEO for your website? Do you want more exposure in your industry? Are you working to establish yourself as a subject matter expert or a thought leader in your industry? Clearly define what your goals are and how you will measure your progress.

2. Create a business page and a personal profile
In much the same way that you would create a separate personal profile and business page on Facebook, you'll want to create a business page on Google+ so that you can keep the two worlds separate. There are limitations for the business pages that don't exist for personal profiles, so get familiar with the guidelines before you start.

On both your business and personal profiles make sure that they are filled out completely. Include a link back to your website and any other sites where your audience might find out more about you and what you have to offer.

Remember to adopt the mindset of adding value first. Just because it's a business page doesn't mean that people want to just see promotions of your stuff. People connect with other people not with your logo.

3. Use relevant keywords in your posts
Optimize your G+ posts with the primary keywords you are trying to rank for on your blog or website. Write interesting, valuable posts and share the content that your network posts generously.

Find the most active time of day to post, but sprinkle your postings throughout the day or the week depending on how often you'll be active.

Tag people in your network when you are writing about something that they have shared, or is relevant to them by adding the "+" sing right before their name. This is not unlike how the "@" sing works on Facebook.

4. Find and follow the high profile influencers in your industry
If you want to be associated with the, 'Who's who?' in your industry or niche, follow them on Google+, comment on what they post, and share their stuff with your network. It's an effective way to gain more visibility for you within the network of a high profile person.

5. Use the +1 button
The +1 button on Google plus is analogous to the 'Like' button on Facebook. When you see a post that you like, you can click the +1 button and even leave a comment for the person who shared that item. The people in your network will begin to reciprocate and click the +1 button when you share items as well. Getting a bunch of +1's can help boost clickthrough rates. Google says that +1's on an item influence the search results of those who are following you, but they can also have an impact on your general search engine results as well.

*Bonus Tip: Invite the people in your network to regularly scheduled hangouts where you share exclusive information, or just have a general meet & greet.

With close to 100 million users on Google+ it makes sense for you to grab your spot and start attracting some of that traffic to your website. The more active you are in sharing relevant content on G+ the more you will show up in the search results for the people in your network.
