Introduced in Feb 2011 and named after Engineer Navneet Panda, Google Panda was a change introduced by Google to improve its filtering thereby giving higher quality sites better ranking and lower quality sites a lower ranking. Websites with a lot of advertising generally lost out here and were ranked lower.
New emphasis was placed on ranking an entire site rather than the traditional page by page ranking. In addition, page date played a more important role.
