Email marketing is getting more and more challenging, but it still remains one of the most effective forms of online marketing. One of the most critical elements of an email is the subject line. In fact, if your email's subject line is not interesting or compelling enough, your subscribers will simply ignore it and you will have wasted your time and effort. The key to a good email conversion rate is a good open-rate. The best way to get the most favorable open rates is to consistently write irresistible email subject lines. Last week I wrote a blog post that covered how to split test email subject lines. Now we're going to take a step back and delve into how to write the subject lines that you will later be testing.

In this article we're going to take a look at three key elements involved in writing email subject lines that entice the subscriber to click on them and open that email to see what's in it for them.

1. Use the Four "U" Approach
Brian Clark, of CopyBlogger has written an excellent post with tips about writing email subject lines, "The Three Key Elements of Irresistible Email Subject Lines." In this post he shares his, "Four U" approach to headline writing, which includes: useful, ultra-specific, unique and urgent. This is a great post to read to get some solid ideas for coming up with good email subject lines.

2. Don't write Spammy Subject Lines
Mustafa Khundmiri, from the Performance Marketing Insider blog, wrote a great post full of excellent tips for writing irresistible email subject lines. One of the tips he shares, "Escape the Spam trap," is important to remember. Refer to your email autoresponder service's guidelines and if they offer a spam detector, use it before you press, 'send.'
Another great tip is to include the most vital information in the first 50 characters of the subject line so that it doesn't get whacked off if the subject line runs too long.

3. Write your subject lines as if they were a tweet
Lisa Sparks wrote this article with, "6 Tips for Better Subject Lines," and one of the tips was called, "Think of your subject line as a tweet." If you consider that you only get 140 characters for a tweet, you can certainly convey what you need to in 50 characters or less. When you keep social media sharing in mind when you compose your subject lines, it might help to add a bit of urgency, a call to action and the sense that the email contains information that they really want to see.

Sparks also mentions the importance of testing your email subject lines as we talked about in a previous post. You might be surprised at how much of a different response you can get by simply changing the wording slightly.

It's fun to think of email marketing as a game where you keep challenging yourself to find ways to improve your open rates and your conversion rates. Writing enticing email subject lines is the first step to a successful email marketing campaign.
