Affiliate marketing has the potential for being a lucrative way to build an online business. However, there is a learning curve that you must work through. As in any other industry, you will be compensated at the level of your skills. Most people who are involved with make money online programs have come across or fallen for online scams because they buy into a lot of hype, and empty promises that feed their greed and tendency to be a bit lazy. For some reason, there seems to be the illusion that just because you are working online you will make money faster and easier than if you were to set up a retail, bricks and mortar business.

The purpose of this article is to give you the knowledge you need to avoid getting scammed by unscrupulous marketers who are looking to take advantage of your lack of knowledge and eagerness to strike it rich online.

1. Don't pay registration fees
There are countless digital marketplaces where affiliate marketers can sign up and find countless affiliate marketing opportunities. If you are being asked to pay a registration fee in order to become an affiliate for a merchant, don't do it. This is most likely a scam.

Do check out free affiliate programs such as these:

  • Amazon Affiliates
  • ClickBank
  • Commission Junction
2. Don't fall for guaranteed returns or ridiculous income claims
There are no guarantees in business or in life. Just because the person who is trying to sell you their program claims to have made $127,362.47 in their first week does not guarantee that you will make one dime.

Do understand that your results will be largely based on your knowledge, skill and effort.
Even if you are marketing a hot-selling product that is in high demand, if you don't do any marketing, you can be assured that the product is never going to simply, "sell itself."

3. Don't believe overly-hyped testimonials.
Sincere testimonials from average-Joe users are far more effective and persuasive than hyped-up, glowing testimonials given by slick marketers, who may not have even tested the product. Marketers can easily get their pals to do testimonial videos for them, so listen carefully to what the person in the video or in the written testimonial is saying. Are they giving a glowing testimonial for the actual product and the results they produced by using it, or are they saying how awesome their pal, the product marketer, John Smith is.

Do contact people who have actually used the product or service and get their reviews about it. It's also helpful to make sure that the person you are talking to is not in a position to earn a commission if they persuade you to purchase the product. Look for an unbiased opinion.

4. Don't fall for unclear payment terms
Sometimes in the excitement of having found what looks like a hot opportunity, you might forget to check exactly what the payment terms are.

Do be sure to get clear information about when, how often and how you will be getting paid.

5. Don't pay for information you can find for free
Another scam that is prevalent is to gather and package up old, already existing information about affiliate marketing or making money online and selling it to in-experienced affiliate marketers.

Do your own research.
Find the reliable sources of free information about affiliate marketing online. Follow and learn from those who are authentically creating the kinds of results you are looking for, and above all else, use your common sense before you press the, 'Buy Now' button.

Once you let go of the idea that there is a way to get rich really fast online, the easier it will be to filter out the hype and nonsense and find legitimate affiliate marketing opportunities.
