Want to know what successful ezine marketers know? Nothing all that secretive. They just know the basic components of a prosperous newsletter. A well designed newsletter will perform much better than a poorly designed one. However, the difference between a good design and a poor design isn't necessarily what you might think.

#1 Distracting Graphics

Many people believe good design means elaborate graphics and a polished look. This isn't true. Elaborate graphics can harm a newsletter's objective. Why? Because they distract from the goal of your content. Your content should be the showcase. Not your graphics.

This is a frequent mistake many new ezine marketers make (and website owners too). They mistakenly assume that adding elaborate graphics willmake their newsletter more persusive. That's not true.

Keep your newsletter design simple and to the point. In fact, many very experienced and successful internet marketers only use text based email messages. That means there are no graphics whatsoever.

#2 Content is Not Legible

When you email your newsletter your main objective is so people will read the content. If they have hard time reading it guess what...they're not going to read it.

Ensure there is plenty of space between words and sentences. Highlight by underlining or bolding the keywords or ideas you want to showcase.. Use subheadings to break up paragraphs. Speaking of paragraphs, make sure they're short - 5 sentences are fine.

Last, remember that your font should be easy to read. Use a dark color and on a light background. Good old black copy on a white background is just fine.

#3 Use Color with an Objective

If you use color make sure it serves an objective. For instance, you can make a headline red to make it stand out. Also be sure to use color consistently. Use it to brand your business. If your website or blog colors are purple and orange then you might choose to use those colors (moderately) in your newsletter too.

Keep it simple! Make sure your content is the star of your newsletter and your readers will respond.

Other important components for your newletter:

1. A great topic line - a topic line is much like a headline. It needs to encorage your subscribers to open the email.

2. Good "From" line - it's crucial that your subscribers know the email is from you. Provide your name or company name is in the "from" line.

3. Persuasive content - content needs to provide quality information to your readers consistently. Value can be informative, entertaining, or useful.

4. Call to action - Provide a clear message. What do want subscribers to do once they've finished reading your newsletter?

5. Simple and clear formatting - is your newsletter easy to read and does the formatting support your goal, brand and objective?

6. Make your subscribe and unsubscribe simple - Ensure you provide a clear and present "unsubscribe" option at the bottom of your newsletter.

7. Consistent branding - voice, format, graphics/design all help create a unified brand.

Additionally, successful newsletters all contain a system to gather information about your campaign. For example how many people opened your newsletter? How many clicked on your internal links? How many forwarded your newsletter to a friend?

Newsletters are one of the best marketing tools for boosting traffic and sales. They're extremely affordable. They're user friendly and they're a exceptional way to interact and communicate with your audience.
