I hear a lot of people around the internet ripping MLM/network marketing as a business model, and I don't really understand why. Sure, I know that some pyramid schemes have disguised themselves as network marketing companies, however there are scam artists in insurance, healthcare, etc...so network marketing isn't the only industry with a few bad apples.

1. MLM is not a pyramid scheme.
Network marketing is simply a distribution model, where "networking & word of mouth" is used to sell products as opposed to expensive advertising campaigns. In fact, over 10 billion (yes, that is with a B) goods & services are sold each year via the MLM distribution model.
2. Every company has a pyramid structure.
You have the CEO at the top, then you have a board of advisors, with managers under them, and employees under the managers. Every corporation in the world resembles a pyramid.
