Any web master knows that his or her most important job is to get website traffic. Without visitors to your site, you'll be lucky to make any money at all through any means. Companies and individuals alike have realized that and a whole slew of options for getting traffic has emerged. Even today, the debate rages on about which one - paid or free methods - work out better for web masters in the end.

1. Paying for Traffic

Countless websites, particularly those belonging to big corporations, pay bundles of money just to get website traffic. Affiliate programs, paid referrals and AdWords are all part of the traffic-for-money scheme. And, to be fair to those programs, they are certainly really quite effective. Most sites pay just for what they get; no traffic, no charge. But maybe that's the problem - paying to get traffic to the website in the first place.

2. Traffic for Free

Yes, you read that right: there are ways to get traffic to your website without getting a bill at the end of the month. However, those methods also entail a lot more work. You have to promote your site yourself. You deal directly with marketing and advertising tasks, on top of administration and maintenance. Results are rarely definite; you just put your site up there, cross your fingers and hope that all your work will increase website traffic for you at the end of the day.

So which method is better? It all depends on you, really. If you have some money and you simply have to have a certain traffic volume, paid methods are worth the money. Otherwise, you might just be paying for traffic you could get for free.
