I recently got involved in a conversation with a marketer in Austin. He has been doing quite well and has been around for awhile. Although I don't know exactly how accurate these numbers are, he pointed some things out to me that I did not realize.

Basically what he said was that after working with many marketers he noticed that for those that stuck around for two or more years, that 70% of them
  • Dont know how to set up a wordpress blog'
  • Set up a squeeze page
  • Write a sales letter
  • Never attracted over 5000 Unigue Visits to all their online adventures combined
  • Have not made over $1000 in a years time-if not ever
  • Never created their own product

His question was...what have these people been focusing on?

It reminded me of something I have been studying on my own when it comes to internet marketing...that people move through stages.

Student level:

Looks at information here and there, not serious at all, glancing at this business from a distance, has no clue, not sure if this is even real.
Level of focus: 5 to 10%

Newbie Level:
Level of focus is 15% to 25%, but it's not focus on one thing, it's focus on all sorts of different things.

Intermediate Level:

50% to 60% focus, but it's not focus, it's time spent. It's time spent on all sorts of different things. The Intermediate might find he/she has spent 30 hours this week on the Internet, but none of it was laser focused on one thing. Most of the focus is all over the place. It's jumbled and there's a lack of "definite purpose".

This level earns some money here and there, maybe maxes out around $3,000 some months... gets gigs here and there, but is not earning enough consistently to quit jobs and rely on this income completely.

Once you hit the intermediate level the only thing that prevents you from moving fulltime is yourself. It has nothing to do with knowledge, resources, or ability.

I also realized that what prevents others from moving through the other phases is themselves. For instance. I have raised two teenagers. It is interesting to watch how both approach life differently. Neither one of my teenagers have ever been in trouble and they have always gotten fair to great grades. But one always gravitates towards social activities while the other takes pre-college courses.
