If there is one thing bloggers always need, it's more traffic. Whether you are building a new blog, or trying to keep an existing blog going, you need lots of visitors to come to your blog, read your content and click your links. Today we're going to look at a couple of different techniques for attracting new crowds of visitors to your blog--blog hops and blog carnivals.

These techniques aren't exactly new, but if you've not tried them you might be in for a surprise at how much fun they can be. Who really can't find some fun in something called a blog hop, right?

Getting started with blog hopping:
A blog hop is simply a list of blogs along a common theme where the members of that list agree to visit all of the other blogs on the list and leave a comment. Additionally, you can share posts that you like and think would be useful to your network on your social media accounts.

Here's how a blog hop works:
There is a blog hop host who creates the blog hop list. Each participant also posts the blog link list on their blogs and promotes the blog hop to their visitors.

Do a search for blog hops in your topic or niche, or you can create your own blog hop if you can't find a good fit. Just give it a name, create a small, 150x150 pixel button for people to add to their blog and use a tool such as linkytools.com to set up the blog hop.

The key to success with blog hopping is to stick close to your target audience and subject matter, and if you are the host, make sure to encourage full participation by all of the members.

Blog carnivals:
A blog carnival is similar to a blog hop, but it's a bit more structured. A blog carnival is a curated collection of links to blogs that fall under a specific topic. Blog carnivals typically come out on the same day each week, or month, and the editor of the carnival typically offers their opinions or comments about the topic.

There are several components to a blog carnival. Here's a breakdown of the roles:

• The Carnival organizer (editor, curator)

Chooses the topic
Sets the criteria and schedule
Recruits volunteers to host

• The Host

Hosts the carnival on their blog

• Bloggers/Contributors

Write blog posts on the carnival topic & submit them to the organizer

• Visitors/ Audience

Bloggers and interested visitors

Basically a blog carnival is a compilation of blog posts on a topic. The organizer is the curator and they maintain the carnival structure as it moves from host blog to host blog. If you are passionate about a topic and want to cultivate a cohesive community around it, a blog carnival would be an excellent way to bring attention and traffic to all blogs associated with it.
