Making mistakes is the quickest way to cause a beginning marketer to quit. Most of us veterans have made many of the same mistakes beginners make every day. Hopefully I can help you avoid some of those mistakes with the five listed below.

1. Selling

One of the biggest mistakes I made when I first started out was trying to sell everything I promoted. It was hard for me to understand that my job was not to sell. The job of selling is done by the sales page provided by the affiliate manager or owner of the product.

You don't need to sell, but instead, provide advice and a review style article about the product. By losing the "buy this now" attitude, you will be able write better content and promote products the proper way, without trying to "sell" them.

2. Spreading Thin

Another huge mistake I made when I first started was to spread myself then. I would try to promote 5 to 10 affiliate products every week and I would change them up more often than necessary. This didn't help me make money, as I wasn't promoting the products making me sales. I was always moving onto another product and I didn't take advantage of the goldmine right in front of me.

Make sure you avoid starting with too many programs at once. Yes, it's great to have multiple streams of income; however, it's also an important to start with just one. I recommend maybe starting with two or three products and working with those until you find success with one. Then, promote that one heavily before moving onto the next batch.

3. Tracking Stats

I am also guilty of the mistake of not tracking traffic, conversions and sales. This made it difficult to understand how I got the traffic, which converted into a sale. Of course, I used tracking for everything now and probably take it a little bit further than I need to. However, this allows me to see where the sales come from, which methods are providing me with the traffic and I can increase those methods to make larger profits.

4. Plan Hopping

Part of being a mature adult is creating a plan and following through with the plan. We all do this every single day whether we realize it or not. However, one of the mistakes I see new affiliate marketers make and I also made is putting together a plan, getting about halfway through it and ditching the plan for something new.

It's better to figure out your plan ahead of time and put it in a step-by-step format, so it's easy to follow. Once you have a plan, put on temporary blinders and avoid any potential distractions. Work your plan, one-step at a time, until you complete it. Then evaluate the plan and see if you need to make changes.

5. ADOS - Attention Deficit Oohhh Shiny

Another huge mistake new marketers make is getting distracted by everything out there. Focus is incredibly important and this goes along with the temporary blinders I was talking about. By putting on the blinders and avoiding all the other programs, as you work your plan, you will have a better chance for success. Taking one-step at a time and work through your plan without making changes and you will be better off.

Often new marketers see the promising headlines of some new product or marketing program and dump their current plan midway. These headlines are like a shiny coin begging to be picked up. When you put on the blinders, you will ignore the promises made; delete the marketing emails and stay focused on the step you are working to complete.
