When it comes to online marketing, 95% of the people doing it are doing it all wrong. This is why 95% of all new online businesses will fail this year. If you want to be in the elite 5% of the people who have success in your internet business, then you will want to change the way in which you market your website.

One of the best things that you can do for yourself when promoting your products and services is to offer something for free, and in return, get your prospect's name and email address. With your prospect's name and email address, you can follow up on them via email and eventually get them to buy your product.

This is known as the "2-step" method of marketing online, and it's very effective. It doesn't matter if you sell a $7 product or a $77 product. Building a list can improve your sales and give you a list of prospects that you can sell to over and over again. It just really is that easy.

Now I have to say something here. Even though the 2-step approach online is good, in some situations, it's just plain old better to lead them straight to your sales page. For example, if you were selling a Playstation 3, Xbox 360, or Nintendo Wii console... it probably wouldn't be best if you just led people to a page where you want to collect their email address.

These 3 products are literally products that sell themselves. If you put anyone of these 3 products up on Ebay to see if it would sell fast.... by the end of the night, your product will have sold (assuming you're doing a 1-day auction). However aside from these products, there are other kinds of products that you probably shouldn't build a list for.

If you sell a book, ebook, CD, DVD, or any kind of "information product" for only $7... it won't be in your best interest to lead people to your sales page. In situations like this, because the price is so low, you will more than likely get more sales from leading them to your sales page, as opposed to focusing on capturing their email.

Nevertheless, you should know that the 2-step method is something that you will definitely want to implement in your online business. You could offer something free in return for their contact information - to follow up on them via email. The possibilities are endless.

You could offer a free report, a free ebook, a free MP3 audio recording, a free video, or even a free newsletter. If you can make your free offer as attractive as possible, you will have a good chance of getting your prospects to sign up to your list, and get your free gift. And make it worthwhile too.

These tips for making the 2-step method of basic online marketing work are things that you can put into use right away. I suggest that you continue to use these techniques because they can really earn you alot of money in your business.

Good luck with having online business success today.
