Over the past few years online, a lot of gurus have taught their readers and students that in order to succeed online one must build their own list of subscribers.
They keep saying that the money is in the list and the relationship with them.

Although this is somewhat true for them because they have 10,000's of subscribers, it may not be so true for the newer person who just got into internet affiliate marketing. This is very true for the new person who just started internet marketing.
Take a look at most of those network marketing companies online. They tell you that you should send your visitors to your own opt in page and follow up with them about joining your opportunity. I can tell you from my own experience that you don't have to build a list because most of your signups will be people who have just joined the list on your first email to them or their first exposure to your opportunity.
I know that you don't have to build a list because I have tested things out myself over the years and can tell you that you can make sales by sending people directly to a sales page or a company video presentation.
A lot of people will bookmark your page for later consideration and some will join on the spot.
Another reason why I don't think that email marketing works so well this year, which is 2013, is mainly because there are 1000's and 1000's of lists out there and your subscribers are being bombarded with emails from other marketers at the same time.
It also sucks when you build a list of 1000 people in your first few weeks, almost no one buys or opens up your emails, and you have to spend more and more money because your list is "growing".
