If you hate the idea of search engine optimization (SEO) or think that it is a topic that is too complex for your brain, then you’re in luck. Because this article will briefly explain what search engine optimization is, and why it’s important for getting more free traffic to your website.

Search engine optimization is simply a matter of selecting the most relevant keywords that relate to your website, and placing these keywords in certain positions on your website to make it easier for the search engine robots to find your website. If you can pick the best and most relevant keywords for your website, then the robots will be able to find your website much easier, and will rank you accordingly because of it.

When selecting your keywords, you will want to insert them into your page title, the body of your webpage, and in the meta tags of your web page. Meta tags are what the robots use as a proper description of your site when ranking your website.

The 3 main search engines that you will want to optimize your website for is Google, Yahoo, and Bing (formally known as MSN). These 3 get more than 90% of the internet's search engine traffic, so it’s important to optimize your site according to their guidelines.

Google is the largest of the 3, and they even have a helpful free book that beginners can use to optimize your website properly. This is a great start for those who have no idea of what seo is and don’t know where to begin. Even though this guide is awesome for getting you on the right track about search engine optimization, don’t think that you will learn Google’s ranking algorithm secret from it.

Google and the other top 2 search engines keep their algorithm secret to prevent spammers from obstructing the search engine results. And I suggest that you don’t try to spam your webpage or any way try to “trick” Google because it won’t work - and could get your website banned from ever being listed.

And by the way, the free seo guide that Google has can be found here:

There are 2 great ways to get your site listed on Google, Yahoo, and Bing. The first way is to simply submit your website to them. And the second way is to receive a high quality backlink from a respected website or blog within your niche. In my opinion the second way is better, because it suggest that you have worthy information and content that internet users can benefit from.

But don’t go running off thinking that your site will be listed immediately for a certain keyword. Sometimes it can take weeks or even months for your site to be listed, so it’s important that you be patient and wait for the results to come. Because if you do it right, then the results will be there.

When the robots do find your site, they don’t just rank your website high just because they found it. Certain techniques are used.

If you submit your website via a “submit my website” form, then when the search engine robot finds your site, it will take a look at all of the webpages that it finds. Then after that, it will read all of the content of your site, then your meta tags, and then all of the links that you’re linking to from your site.

The robot then takes all of this information back to it’s headquarters and indexes whatever it finds - even the sites that you are linking to. If you have a large website, make sure that each page has a definite purpose for you. Because some robots don’t index each and every page on your site. It may only index a few.

After that, the robot will frequently return to your website to see if anything has changed or if you added any new content. And if you have added any content, then it will index some or all of those pages also.

One thing that I mentioned earlier is that you don’t want to spam your page to manipulate the search engines. This is a important point, because these robots are smarter than you think. So don’t do it, and just play by the rules and you will be rewarded for all your hard work.

I hope this article brought clarity as to how search engines work, and I hope you take advantage of Google’s free seo book that they have available for beginners. Good luck!
