There are 3 ingredients, equally important. If you don't have one of them, then it will not work.
1. Does your idea solve a problem for someone?
If you're not creating something that people want, your idea is pretty worthless. A lot of people mistake their passion for their product / website as a real need. Newsflash: just because you think it's awesome, it doesn't mean that it is. It could be, or it may not be. You will find out only when you're going to run it.
Your idea must focus on a specific problem or pain for someone. If it doesn't address a problem, it will not work.
You may have the greatest guide on earth about how to train dogs to sing, but if no one is interested in it, it's not a great product.
2. Is your market broad enough?
If you're addressing a very small community of people, chances are you're not going to make a lot of money, because there's only so many people interested in it.
It doesn't mean it's a bad idea, but you have to be aware of the limitations.
If you're targeting a small niche, just remember... in order to make it work, you have to go after multiple small niches. If you're just obsessing over being the major player in that small niche, you're not going to make more money than going after 20 small niches that you can dominate.
So, you either go after many small niches at once or a big niche. Whatever you choose, know where you're heading.
2. Are you a laser focused guy or girl?
Theidea alone will not make you money. Only the passion you put into this idea will. The execution is a lot more important than the idea. Over the 8 years since I've been doing online business, I've heard a lot of people saying they have a "great idea" of making money online. Yet, many of them never launched a website or if they did, they failed terribly because they didn't know how to market it. Don't be that guy (or girl).
My advice to you:
i) Find a problem / need that you can fulfill
ii) Know how to market it
